About the work
What should people know about your work?
I work with randomly found cardboard boxes. On a general level, I perceive the box as a symbol of the appropriation of space. I reflect on the experience of moving amongst people and in an environment where the rectilinear division of spaces designated for habitation is taken for granted. I work with the need for personal, physical space and its intensity – when it is beneficial, and when it becomes restrictive. I take the need for safety as my own; I observe it without judgement. I’m interested in the moment when an anonymous object becomes something personal. I create objects and reliefs according to the dimensions of each box, creating variations on a human scale. I investigate their possibilities: closing off or opening up. Boxes as spaces for storing, building, inhabiting. Recalling the shelters built by children.
How do you see yourself and your work five years from now?
Five years from now? I’ll probably still be in Prague, though I won’t be closing myself off from the need to pack my things into boxes and move elsewhere, should it arise. My lack of a clear vision at the moment is because I do not fear the future … all I know is that I want to work with my hands, with them closely following my head. I also want to learn new things. And to just be with people.
