About the work
Astracháni / Outsiders
Hana Kuklíková’s graduation work touches on the question of group belonging. It explores the extent to which we are or are not part of a group. It is a personal subject, one in which she explores the long-time feeling that she exists on the margins of various social groups.
To not be inside a group but still be a part of it. When we are alienated, we often use different tools than others. Although the term „Astracháni“ comes from the Czech outdoor and camping movement known as tramping, Kuklíková uses it more generally to describe people and the types of conflict they experience. Put briefly, the term refers to inexperience, imitation, amateurism, and comfort. It contradicts a sense of belonging but is no less an attempt at being authentic. Her work follows on her earlier interest in depicting things that are not at first glance apparent but that „hang“ in the air and also include a view from the other side.
