About the work
Dominika Alexandra Hrňová paints figural scenes adopted from various visual sources. She has recently fallen for the German realist painter of the latter half of the 20th century, one of the pioneers of modernism, Wilhelm Leibl. Later, a New York fellowship turned her attention to a very different setting – performances of transvestites, called drag shows. And finally, the third inspiration for her diploma painting series was 30-year old photographs from her family archive. The artist converts all these motifs into a common denominator, which is her original painting style, characteristic of light, airy atmosphere, and relaxed brushwork. It is the unclear nature of Hrňová’s motifs, rather difficult to decipher, what makes her canvases uniquely attractive.
