„We live behind our transparent walls that seem woven of gleaming air – we are always visible, always washed in light.“ (Yevgeny Zamyatin)

For Karolina Šulcová, life today is very much associated with the need to blow off steam because we are over-saturated by the kinds of distractions or worries that most adults must face on a daily basis. She nevertheless believes that we can find little moments in which to lose ourselves. For her, feeling at home somewhere involves feeling like you belong, knowing how to be just with yourself, knowing yourself better, having a place of one’s own. A place to return to. Coming home is quite possibly just as important as when we set out on a journey. The experience of the journey can fill us with a sense of enrichment and otherness.

Time spent away brings about changes within us. Our view of home is not the same upon our return as when we left, for we see it with new eyes. Šulcová is interested in the uniqueness of moments and memories that change over time. Working from memory, she creates paintings of places that are similar to home. Just as real places are altered in memory, so do her paintings blur and rearrange their true image at a time when she is not visiting the place in question. The places are important to her and her ancestors, and so the paintings’ motifs emerge naturally.
