About the work
Most Magrot‘s works are about interventions into public space. Ironically, his diploma originates from when people were banned to go out during the COVID-19 lockdown. The presented video, Illumination, tracks the feelings of a person confined to his/her flat during that period. It takes Global place in the artist’s own studio and gradually unveils the entire setting: the peculiar crystalline landscape soon becomes objects arranged on the table, through which viewers flip in the form of flies or miniature drones. The gloomy ambiance is augmented by monotonous music evoking the buzz of just a drone or a fly, and the white, aseptic space. Its inhabitant is an odd creature resembling a shagged piece of chewing gum, to symbolize the vegetative style of existence resulting from too many days of solitude. The title may evoke a global conspiracy of the illuminati who reportedly unleashed the pandemic. In fact, the artist was inspired by the algorithm serving to provide authentic lighting of the 3D space in the Unreal Engine 4 creation platform, employed in the work.
