What is your graduation work about?

Jitka Mikolášková’s diploma work is about her childhood memories of the family cottage and its surroundings, where she would once observe various light phenomena of an unknown nature. She is interested in the duality between light and darkness, interpreting it as a spiritual image of the landscape and a paradoxical union of fear and hope. She views the phenomena from multiple levels regarding their origins to avoid esotericism or the search for the supernatural. The impetus for her series was the misinterpretation of many memories that have faded over the years with only their torso remaining. Therefore, she tries to reinterpret, grasp, and preserve them through paintings.

What do you do besides your graduation work?

Jitka is an artist dedicated to descriptive painting. Her work mainly involves landscape painting that highlights the atmosphere, including figurative scenes as active participants in the action in contrast to the surrounding passive environment. In addition, she is currently interested in studying the geological and geomorphological composition of the Earth and exploring the adits and the underground sections between the N-S 73 to N-S 77a fortifications.

In what conditions would you like to work on your graduation work?

The environment and conditions are satisfactory. If only she could have graduated ten years earlier…

What would you imagine to be an alternative culmination of your studies at AVU, in place of the defense of your graduation work?

Attending an academy or university would be pointless without the defense process. However, an alternative could be submitting both the theoretical and practical parts of the graduation work, which would correspond to a selfselected or individual assignment. A committee of theoreticians, teachers, and external experts in the given field would then evaluate the graduation work. Successful passing of the exams would be followed by a collective exhibition at the Trade Fair Palace or on Mars.
